A critical economic challenge
Switzerland is currently witnessing a fascinating but complex economic paradox. The country is seeing a record number of new business creations, but it is also seeing an unprecedented number of companies disappear due to a lack of a successor. Shockingly, current market estimates show that one out of three SMEs in Switzerland disappears for exactly this reason.
The demographic shift in family-owned businesses
Switzerland boasts a dense fabric of family-owned SMEs, which form the vital backbone of the national economy. However, many of the owners of these businesses are now reaching retirement age, with a large portion of SME owners currently being 55 or older. Because of this demographic shift, the market is experiencing a massive wave of business transfers and consolidations. Across the country, roughly 100,000 SMEs are actively facing these succession challenges.
Securing the future of the Mittelstand
For the Swiss-Dutch business network and members of SwissCham NL, the stability of the Swiss SME sector is incredibly important. Ensuring operational continuity and passing these businesses on to the next generation or qualified buyers has become one of the most critical economic challenges of the year.
While this “Silver Wave” of retiring owners poses a significant risk of losing established companies, it also presents a unique opportunity for new entrepreneurs, investors, and cross-border partnerships to step in and sustain these highly profitable enterprises.
